AMR Therapy: Working to Create a Safe Space
AMR Therapy pushes the conventional bounds of an online psychotherapy business, created for individuals exploring their identities, navigating the complexities of religion and queerness, or finding their way through non-monogamous relationships. Yet, our mission extends beyond these specific dimensions. It stands as a haven for anyone wishing to embark on a journey of personal growth, mental health improvement, enhanced communication, and enriched relationships. We believe in the power of personalized, compassionate care that goes beyond profit margins, aiming to create a genuine impact in the lives of those we serve.
AMR Therapy: A Haven for Growth and Connection
AMR Therapy is not just an online psychotherapy business; it was built on my personal and professional journey, shaped by a background in Theology and Social Work, as well as a tapestry of unique family dynamics, life’s unexpected turns, and the beauty found in embracing differences. Growing up in a diverse household, I gained an early appreciation for the richness of diversity as well as the heartache of rejection and loss. Life threw its share of curveballs my way, including personal challenges and the untimely loss of close friends and family. These experiences deepened my empathy, fueling a deeper commitment to build a therapeutic space where understanding, compassion, and inclusivity could thrive. With one important caveat, it was accessible to people who needed the support.
In a world where mental health is often commodified by conglomerates capitalizing on vulnerability, AMR Therapy fights to be seen. We stand as a testament to the strength of a small business, prioritizing inclusivity and affordability over profit. Our sliding scale operation ensures accessibility, making mental health support available to a diverse range of individuals.
AMR Therapy: A Journey of Dedication and Support
AMR Therapy’s origin story lies in the dedication of a dream to help others and promote social justice. I knew this was my life’s mission I just didn’t know how I would get there. Rooted in a young child’s dream of a better world, my journey commenced long before college. Faced with the need to keep my life a secret due to my parents’ sexual orientation and relationship dynamics, I embraced the challenge, determined to fight for a better future.
In 8th grade, amidst the height of the AIDS epidemic, I delivered my first intense speech on HIV and AIDS as my father’s friends were sadly passing away. Alongside dedicated friends, we initiated the first LGBTQ club at our high school, challenging the school board and achieving the milestone of becoming the first high school to march in a gay pride parade—an accomplishment that has become practically a requirement in some areas today.
Throughout high school, I actively participated in clubs, underwent sensitivity training, attended churches, and fought relentlessly to be recognized as a human being while navigating and understanding my own sexuality. In college, my academic pursuits led me to the study of Southeast Asian religions, a field that continues to influence both my personal life and therapy sessions when appropriate.
My academic journey progressed with a Master’s degree in Theology, focusing on Liberation Theology and Queerness. Armed with this knowledge, I ventured into grad school, earning my Master of Social Work (MSW) and becoming a fully licensed clinician. This academic trajectory empowered me to work with a diverse range of individuals, utilizing my unique blend of theological insights and social work principles. I’ve had the privilege to contribute to articles, give speeches across the country, and teach others what I’ve learned, all while being blessed enough to absorb wisdom from those around me.
In 2018, armed with only a few dollars in my pocket and a dream fueled by the support of friends, a partner, and like-minded grad school companions, I embarked on the creation of AMR Therapy. Working a full-time job and slowly building the business into what it is today—serving 1600 clients—the goal was to establish a video-based sliding scale operation. This approach aimed not just at a business strategy but at a commitment to making mental health support accessible to everyone, irrespective of their background or financial capacity.
With this incredible support, we found success year after year, reaching more and more people. When Covid hit, the mental health landscape became dominated by conglomerates capitalizing on vulnerabilities. It was a challenging period, but AMR Therapy remained a small business fighting to be seen. Our mission persisted, prioritizing inclusivity, accessibility, personal care, affordability, and, of course, ethical and evidence-based care over profit.
